The Citizenship programme at Saint Bede’s Catholic High School endeavours to enhance the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils and enables them to develop as successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to our school community and to society.
We also aim to promote fundamental British values in line with the government's PREVENT theme. These British values are: democracy; individual liberty; the rule of law; mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and belief and will be taught across both KS3 and KS4. The UK Government recommended citizenship education for implementing its anti-extremist Prevent Duty that became a legal requirement in schools on 1 July 2015.
The programme of study aims to make the pupils:
- aware of their rights and responsibilities as citizens
- informed about the social and political world
- concerned about the welfare of others
- articulate in their opinions and arguments
- capable of having an influence on the world
- active in their communities
The fundamental British Values that we and all schools are required to promote are:
- the rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith
These are all interwoven with our ‘Being a Bede’ philosophy which underpins all we do.
Some examples of how British Values are reflected in our lives at Saint Bede’s:
Democracy can be seen as a state of society characterised by equality of rights and privileges. It can also refer to our nation’s electoral systems.
We, at Saint Bede’s are a community where we are all equal and treat each other with respect. We all have the right to a good education in a safe environment. We also have elections for Year/Form reps and for Head Boy/Girl positions.
The Rule of Law
All people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law that is fairly applied and enforced.
At Saint Bede’s we have our own B4L system, which stipulates how we should behave during lessons and at other times during the school day. We understand why we have rules and how they enable us to live in a safe, fair, calm and orderly society. We know there are consequences if we decide to break these rules. There is also a rewards system in place which rewards progress, effort and behaviour.
Individual Liberty -
Individual liberty suggests the free exercise of rights generally seen as outside Government control.
At Saint Bede’s we offer pupils the opportunity to use the SLC, to join a host of different clubs and groups and participate in as many extra-curricular activities as they wish.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Other Faiths and Beliefs
The proper regard for an individual’s dignity, which is reciprocated and a fair, objective, and permissive attitude to those whose faith and beliefs may differ from one’s own.
The whole concept of tolerance and respect is synonymous with the ethos of ‘Being a Bede’. This ethos and caring attitude pervades life at Saint Bede’s. At the heart of this is Christ’s commandment to ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
KEY STAGE 3
Students will be taught about:
- Democracy: how Britain differs from other countries who use other forms of rule.
- Individual Liberty: their rights to choose freely within the laws of the land that protect us.
- The rule of law: how the law is there to protect the citizens of Britain, how it is applied and who enforces it.
- Mutual respect: we learn and reinforce the values of respect for each other.
- Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs: pupils will learn that there are people of different faiths and beliefs from their own and that each person has the right to practice these in a right and just society.
Our aim is to ensure the pupils see that the ethos of ‘being a Bede’ envelops these British values and can see these values in operation throughout their time at Saint Bede's School.
