The Social Learning Centre has been specially designed with our pupils in mind. Resources are chosen to link with subjects covered in class and to help with homework. In addition, there are lots of things of interest: a suite of sixteen laptops and four iPads, the latest fiction, great information books and magazines.
Pupils automatically become a member of the Social Learning Centre when they join the school. Lost or damaged books are charged at the full price of replacement. Pupils are allowed to borrow up to six resources which they may keep for up to two weeks. If they wish to keep them for longer, they must bring them back or renew them online. The Social Learning Centre is open Monday to Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. At break, lunch and after school pupils may use the centre for private study, book selection, homework, reading, research and for access to the computers. Teachers can book the area for their classes to use during lesson time to access both traditional and ICT resources.
Eclipse.net, the school library system, is web-based and provides twenty-four hour access to the SLC’s resources. Eclipse can be accessed through a browser or by using the ‘iMLS’ app, which is available via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. In addition to acting as their library card, the app allows pupils to check their account, browse and reserve the latest books and much more.
During free-time, there is a member of staff in the SLC to supervise the pupils and who is always on hand to help pupils. In addition, there are Pupil Librarians who take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the centre.
We also hold lots of fun events such as: Book Week, Roald Dahl Day, World Book Day, Lancashire Book of the Year Award, author visits and even a Year 7 and 8 Disco fundraiser - all of which goes towards making the Social Learning Centre a vibrant and well-used department within the school.
